St. Lucia
Home to lush rainforests, mountainous landscapes, community fish fries and some of the best luxury hotels in the Caribbean, it's no wonder why the editors at Frommer's have put St. Lucia among its top 10 'Best and Most Beautiful' spots on offer for 2008, and have touted it as a "must experience" destination.
Located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, St. Lucia is one of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, and sits between Martinique and St. Vincent, north of Barbados. And as far as its natural beauty goes, this island seems like it has been plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean.
Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rainforests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. Brilliantly-plumed tropical birds abound, including endangered species like the indigenous St. Lucia parrot.
